EMDH × Strasbourg
Strasbourgban, alig néhány száz méterre az Európai Parlamenttől és az Európa Tanácstól, megbújik egy apró zöld tér: a Petőfi Sándor tér. Itt áll Franciaország egyetlen ismert Petőfi-emlékműve. Mintha maga a természet is őrizné: mögötte magasodik egy különleges kaukázusi lucfenyő, Strasbourg 64 kiemelkedő, védett fájának egyike — sűrű lombja pajzsként borul az emlékmű fölé.
Rescrit Mécénat — a francia adományozók adójuk 66%-át visszaigényelhetik.
Az 1994-ben felavatott emlékmű évtizedeken át szinte észrevétlenül állt a fa alatt. Gimnazisták bicikliztek át a gyepen, a villamosról leszállók elsiettek mellette.
A helyi magyarok azonban évről évre visszatértek. Virágot, koszorút helyeztek el Petőfi előtt. Számukra ez a kis tér egy tenyérnyi Magyarország volt Strasbourgban.
2024. október 23-án a Tisza Párt Európai Parlamenti képviselői és a Strasbourg környékén élő magyarok itt emlékeztek meg 1956-ról.
Tisza-szigetek tagjai érkeztek több európai városból — Magyar Péter, a mostani miniszterelnök, beszédet mondott, Tarr Zoltán pedig felavatta a Petőfit végre bemutató kétnyelvű táblát. Koszorúk, zászlók és virágok borították az emlékművet.
Egy lelkes francia egyetemista fotói nyomán a felkoszorúzott Petőfi tér önálló helyszínként megjelent a Google térképen is. Az emberek megálltak és kérdeztek: Ki volt Petőfi? Miért fontos ennyire a magyaroknak? A sokáig szunnyadó tér beszélni kezdett.
Május 15-én ismeretlenek lefeszítették és elvitték Petőfi bronzdomborművét, kivésték a feliratokat és megrongálták az emlékművet. Ahol addig Petőfi arca volt, csak egy üres hely maradt.
Hiába volt rendőrségi bejelentés és helyi újságcikk, a város évekig nem ért volna rá ezzel foglalkozni. A tér lerongyolódott.
Az EMDH — Európai Magyar Diaszpóra Hálózat — Petőfit vissza akarta adni Strasbourgnak.
Megkezdődött az újjáépítés szervezése Strasbourg városával, a magyar külképviselettel, a magyar diaszpórával és szakemberekkel együtt. A város új talapzaton dolgozik, a magyar képviselet részleges támogatást szerzett a bronz újraöntéséhez. Az EMDH pedig nekilátott megkeresni az eredetit.
Több mint harminc év telt el, de sikerült megtalálnunk az eredeti gipszmodellt, amelyből a strasbourgi Petőfi bronzarca készült. Az EMDH megszerezte a modellt és a reprodukció jogát.
Ez azt jelenti, hogy az új dombormű nem fénykép alapján készített másolat lesz: ugyanabból az eredetiből születhet újjá Petőfi arca, mint 1994-ben.
Ehhez azonban segítségre van szükségünk. Az adományokból az eredeti gipszmodell és a reprodukciós jog költségeit, valamint az új bronzdombormű elkészítéséhez és Strasbourgba juttatásához kapcsolódó kiadásokat szeretnénk fedezni.
Célunk, hogy az 1956-os forradalom 70. évfordulóján, 2026. október 21-én, Petőfi ismét ott álljon a róla elnevezett téren — a fa alatt, a virágok között, Európa intézményeinek szomszédságában.
Sok apró segítségből szeretnénk visszaadni Petőfi arcát ennek a különleges helynek. Egy emlékművet darabonként lehet lerombolni. De darabonként újjá is lehet építeni.
Az új talapzat alatt időkapszulát szeretnénk elhelyezni 2026. október 5-én, azok nevével, akik 100 euróval vagy annál nagyobb összeggel, „Gyémánt támogatóként” segítik az újjászületést — hogy egyszer az utánunk jövők is tudják, kik voltak azok, akik 2026-ban különösen a szívükön viselték Petőfi strasbourgi emlékhelyének sorsát.

In Strasbourg, just a few hundred metres from the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, lies a small green square: Sándor Petőfi Square. Here stands France's only Petőfi memorial. It feels almost as if nature itself were guarding it — behind the monument rises a magnificent Caucasian spruce, one of Strasbourg's 64 protected "remarkable trees," its canopy stretching over the memorial like a shield.
The monument was inaugurated in 1994. For years it stood almost unnoticed beneath the tree — students cycled across the lawn, commuters stepped off the tram and hurried past.
But the local Hungarian community kept returning, year after year, laying flowers and wreaths before Petőfi. For them, this small square was a palm-sized piece of Hungary in Strasbourg.
In March 2025, the dynamic of this small square changed. The Hungarian opposition — which has since won seven seats in the European Parliament — brought new energy to the square as a symbol of the wish for freedom: it was here that opposition leader Péter Magyar, widely seen as Hungary's future Prime Minister, gave his first address to Hungarian expatriates, on 12 March 2025, mobilising the diaspora as well.
On 15 May, unknown perpetrators tore away and stole the bronze relief of Petőfi, carved out the inscriptions and damaged the monument. Where his face had been, only an empty space remained.
A police report was filed and the local press covered the vandalism, but without a dedicated effort, restoration could have taken years. The square began to deteriorate around the damaged, faceless column.
EMDH — the European Hungarian Diaspora Network — decided this could not be the end of the story: Petőfi must return to Strasbourg.
Together with the City of Strasbourg, the Hungarian representation, the diaspora and specialist craftsmen, we began organising the reconstruction. The city is preparing a new pedestal; the Hungarian representation secured partial funding for recasting the bronze. And EMDH began searching for something we hardly dared hope still existed: the original.
More than thirty years later, we located the original plaster model from which Petőfi's bronze portrait in Strasbourg was cast. EMDH acquired the model and the reproduction rights.
This changes everything: the new relief won't be reconstructed from photographs. Petőfi's face can be reborn from the very same original that gave it form in 1994.
Your donations will cover the cost of the original plaster model and its reproduction rights, plus the expenses of casting the new bronze relief and bringing it safely to Strasbourg.
Our goal: on the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution — 21 October 2026 — Petőfi should stand again in the square that bears his name. Under the tree, among the flowers, beside the institutions of Europe.
Every contribution matters, large or small. A monument can be destroyed piece by piece. But piece by piece, it can also be rebuilt.
Beneath the new pedestal, we will place a time capsule on 5 October 2026, containing the names of everyone who gives €100 or more as a "Diamond Supporter" — so that those who come after us will know who, in 2026, carried the fate of Petőfi's Strasbourg memorial especially close to their hearts.

À Strasbourg, à quelques centaines de mètres seulement du Parlement européen et du Conseil de l'Europe, se cache un petit écrin de verdure : le square Sándor Petőfi. C'est ici que se trouve le seul monument connu en France consacré à Petőfi. Comme si la nature elle-même veillait sur lui : un remarquable épicéa du Caucase, l'un des 64 arbres remarquables et protégés de Strasbourg, étend son feuillage au-dessus du monument comme un bouclier.

Inauguré en 1994, le monument est resté pendant des décennies presque invisible sous l'arbre. Des lycéens traversaient la pelouse à vélo, les passants descendus du tram se hâtaient sans le remarquer.
Les Hongrois de la région, eux, revenaient chaque année déposer des fleurs et des couronnes devant Petőfi. Pour eux, ce petit square était comme un morceau de Hongrie au cœur de Strasbourg.
En mars 2025, la dynamique de ce petit square a changé. L'opposition hongroise — qui a depuis remporté sept sièges au Parlement européen — a redonné vie au square comme symbole du désir de liberté : c'est ici que Péter Magyar, chef de l'opposition et vu par beaucoup comme le futur Premier ministre hongrois, a prononcé son premier discours devant des Hongrois expatriés, le 12 mars 2025, mobilisant ainsi la diaspora.
Le 15 mai, des inconnus ont arraché et emporté le bas-relief en bronze de Petőfi, détérioré les inscriptions et endommagé le monument. À l'endroit où se trouvait son visage, il ne restait plus qu'un vide.
Malgré le dépôt de plainte et un article dans la presse locale, la ville n'aurait vraisemblablement pas pu s'en occuper rapidement. Le square s'est dégradé autour de la colonne endommagée, privée de son visage.
L'EMDH — Réseau Européen de la Diaspora Hongroise — a décidé que l'histoire ne pouvait pas s'arrêter là : Petőfi doit revenir à Strasbourg.
Avec la Ville de Strasbourg, la représentation hongroise, la diaspora et des professionnels spécialisés, nous avons commencé à organiser la reconstruction. La Ville prépare un nouveau socle ; la représentation hongroise a obtenu un financement partiel pour la refonte du bronze. Et l'EMDH s'est mise à la recherche de l'original.
Plus de trente ans après, nous avons retrouvé le modèle original en plâtre qui avait servi à réaliser le visage en bronze de Petőfi à Strasbourg. L'EMDH a acquis le modèle et les droits de reproduction.
Cela change tout : le nouveau bas-relief ne sera pas une copie réalisée à partir d'une photo. Le visage de Petőfi pourra renaître à partir du même original qu'en 1994.
